With decades of hindsight, it's increasingly clear to me what a total bunch of weirdos the Star Trek cast were, intrinsically, even before they were cast on the show, etc. This whole pre-internet, pre-home-video "convention" scene is like something out of the American Frontier; it's so primitive! Six or seven oddball, fringe television actors ended up in the nexus of this crazy, crazy phenomenon. Strange and wonderful, I guess.
