My single favorite entertainment discovery of 2006 is a Nickelodeon show

Opening for Avatar: The Last Airbender (0:45)

This show wrapped its second season just over a month ago. The opening explains it all, especially first five seconds. The hook is people throwing around rocks, flames, etc. but...and this is good...they make it happen with distinct moves that are based on real-life martial arts. If my point's not getting across, trust me: it is soo cooool. Added to that is a top-notch story with great characters, beautiful visuals and solid philosophy. Since I found out about this show I've been kind of obsessed with it, so much so that I'm enjoying this between-season break when I don't have to worry about what's happening to Aang, Katara, Sokka and Toph. Especially Toph. Here's some shots of Toph and Katara (Earthbender and Waterbender) working their stuff.

I love it. I just love it. Throw the first dvd onto your Netflix queue and see what you think. It hooked me immediately. If you've got kids who can watch it, they'll love it, too. The action scenes are stunning while managing to keep the violence to a minimum.

Right now the first season is on dvd and you can get the second one on iTunes or any number of other ways. If they're true to form they'll start cranking out season 2 on dvd when season 3 starts up on the air, which will be in March.

Thanks to Avatarspririt.net for the screenshots.

And the reason I don't want M. Night Shavanity Case anywhere near this thing is that I don't trust him not to fuck it up because during the whole project he thinks he's slumming by not getting to make one of his craptastic ideas come to "life."

God he sucks.
