Julie on the Radio

A friend of a friend interviewed me for this segment on NPR about Ricki Lake's film The Business of Being Born. I don't think my skepticism came across, because my little quotes got cherry picked. But the piece was even handed anyway.

You can listen here.

I can't listen to it until I get home but that's really cool!

And is that a recent picture of Ricky Lake? 'Cuz if it is, she's holding up pretty damn well (much to JPX's dismay I suspect.)

Awesome! Thanks landshark, that link worked.

I think you sounded very fair-minded Julie - it is a monumental decision. My kids were both born in the hospital, with a Certified Nurse Midwife. When I was pregnant with Jake my parents were freaking about the Midwife thing because they assumed that CNM equaled birth at home, which is not true.
As I have said in the past - I have HUGE respect for women who have "natural" childbirth (no drugs)but that was not for me.

The idea of home birth kind of freaks me out because I worry about the possibilites of complications. I mean, what if something happened to your baby because of your decision not to be in a hospital?
No matter how the baby gets here, it's one of the most unbelievable experiences of your life - why not make it the safest too?

Well, that was a long post -sorry everyone!

I'm very pro doctor and very anti this movie. My quotes got cherry picked. Ah well. I was mostly pointing out all the logical flaws in the film. But then I conceded that the home birth had its appeal. I guess the author needed someone saying that stuff, so it turned out to be me!
