Would you believe 'Get Smart' is No. 1 at the box office?

By Scott Bowles, USA TODAY

The Steve Carell adaptation of the 1960s television show did $5 million more than expected, taking first place with $39.1 million, according to studio estimates from box office trackers Nielsen EDI.

The haul made it an easy winner at theaters for the weekend, particularly given the weak showing of the Mike Myers comedy The Love Guru. Myers' first live-action comedy in five years was pummeled by critics and did just $14 million, almost $10 million below some projections and good for just fourth place.

Kung Fu Panda continued its strong run, taking second place with $21.7 million and bringing the animated comedy's total to $155.6 million.

The Incredible Hulk was third with $21.6 million, leaving its future, at least as a stand-alone franchise, in question. The film dropped 61% from its debut. While that's not as imposing as the 70% drop of the 2003 Hulk, the new film has done $96.5 million — well below its $150 million budget.

M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening also took a significant tumble, dropping 67% from its opening to do $10 million and fifth place. It has done $50.3 million in 10 days.

Opening on five screens, Kit Kittredge: An American Girl did $221,000 on five screens for an impressive $44,500 per-theater average. The family film expands to 2,500 screens July 2.

Iron Man became the first movie of the year to pass $300 million, bringing in $4 million this weekend and lifting its total to $304.8 million.

June ticket sales remained strong as grosses were up 10% from the same weekend last year.

I took Jake to see "Kung Fu Panda" for his birthday, and I have to admit I really liked it!

some friends just saw the happening and their review was: "that movie should never have been made."

AC, I'm no shrink, but that sounds like they had negative feelings about the film....

DCD, how did Jake like it? ('Cause I've a little more in common with a 5-year old.)

Well, what can I say - I have plebian tastes. Plus, I think I have a different take on some things when seeing them through my kids eyes.

Miko, Jake liked it a lot too.
