them or me?

It's a slow blog day so I thought I'd post about my current lifestyle dilemma, thus opening myself up to comment ranging from support to ridicule (I'm counting on you for the latter, sweatpants!). In a nutshell, I've been a happy vegetarian for over 2 years now (on and off veg since I was 13) but have been sick a lot this winter and several people have suggested maybe a little animal protein is what's called for. So I'm on week two of eating meat again and am ambivalent at best. Not really enjoying the meaty goodness yet, nor am I sure if it is helping me in terms of health and energy. Will keep up the experiment for a while regardless. Not sure what I want the outcome to be. That's the scoop!

Yay for meat!

I'm not against vegetarianism or anything per se... I just can't ever see cutting myself off from a particular food group. I just like food too much. Sure there are particular things I don't like, brussel sprouts come to mind, but to never again taste the fabulousness of a filet mignon? Not happening.

It sucks to have to eat something that you are not enjoying. Do supplements not work for you?

AC, I can imagine it would be tough to find a wide variety of protein-rich foods on a Veg diet...once you eat your weight in nuts and beans...what do you do?
You know I have mellowed in my old age, so I don't try to push my beliefs on anyone anymore, but I do loves me some meat. Could you do a "reduced" meat diet, with a concentration on Fish and poultry? Perhaps you could be the first "non-mammalian" eater...

Nah, I have nothing against vegetarians – they never done hurt nobody etc. I would suggest spending the extra $$$ to get quality meat. Remember – “organic” doesn’t mean shit. Look for “free range” or “grass fed”. Not only can you taste the difference, you can sleep knowing you’re not eating some disgusting wretch that was fed empty corn against its natural diet. Not to mention pumped with antibiotics to stop it from puking everywhere due to the horrid living conditions. As Michael Pollan says “You are what you eat eats”.

I would kill a man for a hamburger right now.

I've never understood vegetarianism, it just seems to suck the fun out of life and limit your enjoyment in social situations for no discernible reason. I say go for it, eat some meat!

I lived vegetarian for 3 years some time back. Saw a film on processing plants and I swore off meat. Somewhere down the line I began eating meat again and realized that I missed it. I usually go veggie for a month every year just to clean my system out, Tony hates that month.

If you really don't like it then you should look into what vitamin supplements you can take to replace the meat. Otherwise I highly recommend a trek to Wes' Ribs in Olneyville for a damn good meat overload.

hah! thanks for all the comments guys. good advice all 'round. i did eat a turkey burger last night, octo, which may be as close as i'll get to an in n out burger for now. it would be cool if i could work my way back to a few bites of filet mignon... grass fed if possible johnny. if i had to guess, longer term i'll be mostly veg, sometimes omnivore, but we'll see. of course now i'm kicking myself i didn't convert prior to the "team cross east coast celebration". :)
