Disney and Robert Zemeckis to remake the Beatles' 'Yellow Submarine'

From EW, Disney has tapped director Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Back to the Future) to remake the Beatles’ 1968 animated feature Yellow Submarine, according to Variety. Zemeckis will utilize the same 3-D performance-capture techniques that he employed in The Polar Express, Beowulf, and this year’s A Christmas Carol. The movie is tentitively scheduled to be released in the summer of 2012.

Great. Tom Hanks as Paul. In creepy CGI.

You have time for this, but not to bash your brother a little bit? After I just baited you???

Oh, I have a bad feeling about this.

Really? Yellow Submarine? Is nothing untouchable?

I'll just predict it here: "Peter Jackson signs on to produce Cap'n Crunch Trilogy."

It's coming, maybe not in that form, but it's comin'....

I disagree with all of youse. I love Yellow Submarine and I have a serious amount of respect for Zemekis.

Zemekis' career has three stages, each of which is cool and has produced great work (and there's one total abomination in there, called Forrest Gump,, which I detest for political as well as aesthetic reasons, but about that the less said the better.

Stage 1 is Zemekis the summer movie god, which brings us Back to the Future, Roger Rabbit, and, finally, the Back to the Future sequels, which are the first real hint of just how damned clever the man is. Seriously, the BTTF trilogy is a masterpiece of infernal cleverness, not just from a time travel perspective but from a filmmaking perspective as well. Those sequels were made by a guy who knows exactly what he's doing from a technical and structural standpoint (although nobody likes the "chicken" plot thread; you've got me there).

Stage 2 is when Zemekis becomes "Mr. Serious" (after the awful movie I mentioned at the top) and turns out Contact, Cast Away and a couple of others. He's got a whole new tone; he's aiming for the adult market, and the movies are extremely good.

Stage 3 is when he switches from "Mr. Serious" to "Mr. CGI," and you have to admire the man's dedication: he just won't stop. First was Polar Express which I have not seen, and then Beowulf which I fucking love to death. I think the Jim Carrey one looks kind of dumb, but if he's going to bring his "Beowulf" game to Yellow Submarine I'll be first on line.

And so what if it won't be the real Beatles? It wasn't last time either.
