Bryan Singer Directing Battlestar Galactica Confirmed

Yesterday we told you here about the rumor that Bryan Singer was in talks to direct a movie version of Battlestar Galactica Now it’s official. Variety says he’s signed on the dotted line.

Bryan Singer is officially doing a Battlestar Galactica movie, but hold your applause. If you’re hoping for a script by Ronald Moore or anything in any way related to the recently finished, wildly popular Sci-Fi television show he shepherded, forget it. The film will be produced by Glen Larson who was responsible for the original 70s version of the franchise. Larson hates Ronald Moore’s version and has been very vocal about his desire to ditch it in favor of a reboot based on his less successful, sillier, 70s version of Galactica. If Larson is producing, then that’s where Singer and Battlestar Galactica are heading: Back to the 70s.

Still, the premise is the same. Both the 70s version and the more recent Sci-Fi Channel version are about a galaxy far away where the human race creates intelligent robots called Cylons. The Cylons turn on humanity, destroying all of civilization except for a small, rag tag fleet of ships on the run and lead by the humanity’s last warship, the battlestar Galactica. Hunted and pursued by the Cylons, they fight their way through space looking for safety and a new home.
