Jason Reitman Hates 3D and Thinks "Avatar" is Goofy

From worstpreviews, MovieRetriever sat down with director Jason Reitman (Juno, Thank You for Smoking) to talk about his new movie, "Up in the Air." During the conversation, the two covered many different topics, including 3D and James Cameron's "Avatar."

"First off, I hate 3D," Reitman said about Hollywood's latest favorite technique. "After about 20-30 minutes, I'm always like, 'Okay. I get it.'"

He then went on to say that after all the hype, he was very disappointed by the "Avatar" trailer. "I have to admit that I don't like the new 'Avatar trailer," he revealed. "Everyone likes the new one. It's the one everyone gets excited about. I'm like, 'I want to love this movie SO bad.' I'm the biggest [James] Cameron fan. I love every one of his films. I read all this hype about the new trailer. I went and watched and I was like, 'Oh. It still seems pretty goofy to me.'"

Reitman added that it's because Cameron is such a good director, that the trailer felt so average. "But, if it said, 'A new film from Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil, Alien vs Predator).' You wouldn't be like, 'Wow. This looks like the best Paul W.S. Anderson film of all time.'"

And even though he didn't like the trailer, Reitman will still give the 3D movie a shot. "But I don't like 3D. I'm almost apt to see the movie in 2D," he stated.

First off, this Reitman guy sounds like a real douchebag in the various interviews I've seen around. He's in the Sofia Coppola "I'm a genius and my dad has nothing to do with my success; honest" camp.

Secondly, I refer everyone back to my Avatar post from a couple weeks ago, which even has a cartoon.

Yeah, he sounds and looks like a total ass. Who the hell hates 3D? Juno was grossly overrated too.

Saying he "gets" 3D after 20-30 minutes is a little too close to "Enough with the CG, I already know what CG looks like" for my taste.

God, I'm listening to the song right now and it's awful.

What's also awful is, I keep watching these commercials and it's all "biggest adventure" this and "not in Kansas" that, and I can't help but think this movie is screaming "We remade Pocahontas!

All these internet defenders of Avatar (whatever you want to call them collectively) are getting upset and saying, "Why all the hate? Why does it mean so much to you? Why are you gunning for Avatar?" etc.

And, it's actually an interesting question. I thought about it for a minute and then realized, Because it pisses me off! The whole thing irritates me, because it's insulting and intrusive, and manipulates my geek goodwill. I mean, look at the whole Star Trek "h8trz" vs. fans thing that happened around the J. J. Abrams movie, where the whole point turned out to be that Star Trek matters, you know? That it's culturally significant, a beloved set of ideas and images and stories that happen to be a corporate property.

I mean, you can't have it both ways, you know? If they expect us to be like some kind of fucking Pavlovian dogs and go bananas over the big movies (and legitimately mean it) then we should also be legitimately entitled to be disappointed, irritated, and condescended to when appropriate. To the same degree I was excited about [fill in the blank: The Fellowship of the Ring, Watchmen, The Dark Knight, Casino Royale, Star Trek etc.) beforehad, I'm totally allowed to be pissed off by Avatar in the same way, to the same degree, just as prematurely.

This may sound strange, but I'm just really curious to see if the box office take for Avatar will surpass that of New Moon.

Because, if it doesn't, well, how insulting would that be?

Trevor, I've had the same thought. It's like Kidman winning Oscars when Cruise doesn't, or, um, other examples I can't think of. Farrah Fawcett vs. Lee Majors?
