From ew, Iron Man 2 blacked out everything else in its path, earning $133.6 million for the three-day frame. The Marvel Entertainment juggernaut didn’t bypass The Dark Knight’s weekend record of $158 million but got close to surpassing Pirates of the Caribbean 3′s opening of $135.6 million. In actuality, it now stands as the fifth highest opening weekend ever. It should be noted that the 2-D event movie earned 8% of its gross from the $10.2 million earned from IMAX theaters. And though it’s a sequel, which often times burns through theaters quicker, this Robert Downey Jr.-starrer scored an A with audiences according to Cinemascore. That will bode well for its theatrical longevity. Internationally, Iron Man 2 grossed an additional $57.2 million. Now open across 61 international territories, the movie’s international gross stands at $194 million.

The majority of the rest of the top ten fell off quite steeply with Nightmare on Elm Street suffering the most from the Iron Man competition. The R-rated horror redo dropped off 72% from its opening weekend to $9.2 million. The film’s total now stands at $48.5 million. Third place went to How to Train Your Dragon, which lost its greatest amount since debuting two months ago. The PG-rated kid flick lost 36% of its value and earned another $6.7 million, enough to put its cume at $201 million. Surprisingly, Iron Man could do little to throw Date Night off its amazing run. The Steve Carell, Tina Fey-starrer lost only 30% of its value with an additional $5.3 million. The movie’s total has reached $80.8 million. The Back-Up Plan also stayed in theaters remarkably well for its third weekend. Losing only 40% of its value, the film grossed another $4.3 million which put its total at $29.4 million.

Summit’s Furry Vengeance took the sixth slot for the weekend. Losing 41% of its value, the PG-rated comedy grossed only $3.9 million. The Brenden Fraser-starrer has earned only $11.5 million since opening last weekend. Clash of the Titans was in spot seven. Losing 61% of its value, the movie earned $2.3 million to put its total domestic take at $157.8 million. Screen Gem’s Death at a Funeral earned the 8th spot, grossing an estimated $2.1 million to put its 4-week total at $38.3 million. Spot nine were held by The Losers, which earned another $1.8 million to put its total gross at a paltry $21.4 million. The only other new release of the frame was Babies, which debuted in 534 theaters for a tenth place finish. The Mother’s Day appeal of the documentary that tracks four babies from around the world during their first year of life grossed $1.5 million. And speaking of Mother’s Day, I hope all you mothers out there are treated like royalty today. See you next week at the box office.
