I pegged the first one as a rental early on, and then rented as such.

Could NOT get emotionally invested. Not engaging, twisted exposition, RDJ's accent almost TOO good to the point of incoherence, and a decided lack of that summer blockbuster accessibility (not quite the dumb-it-down shit, but just a basic coherence and accessibility to the plot - something the first Pirates did very well).

RDJ is absolutely incredible as an actor, and I was totally in his corner for this one; I thought it would be sharp, witty, crisp, and brilliantly written. As it turned out, I feel like they certainly aimed for that, but not only did the dart not hit the dartboard, but it sailed off and hit the bartender in the eye, who failed to serve drinks for the rest of the night. Metaphorically.

Anyway, maybe with SH2 we can hope for a Boba Fett/carbonite-freeze-type moment.

You sir, have a gift.

I rented this recently and liked it, but I was wishing I liked it more. I didn't find the same flaws as Stan (besides RDJ's occasional mumbling, which made me rewind with subtitles on) besides a general lack of zing. I'd still give it 3 1/2 stars, and I'm glad they're doing a sequel.
