Terror

(1979) **1/2

*Not to be confused with The Terror, the dreadful early Jack Nicholson movie

A woman gets caught in a bear trap and then burned at the stake. A man is beheaded. The end.

I thought I struck Horrorthon gold but the first 5 minutes turned out to be one of those movies within the movie. Sigh. James is airing the above film to his bored friends in his home where the murders allegedly took place 300 years ago. Funny friend Gary spruces up the party by hypnotizing James’ cousin Anne. The hypnosis works only not the way Gary intended. Anne unknowingly grabs a sword off the wall and slices James in the arm. After an old fashioned bitch slap, she snaps out of it.

Soon thereafter, a murderer is in their midst. James (who also happens to be a B-movie director) has much on his hands as his actors and crew members are violently murdered. Either Anne has gone completely mad or there actually is something to that old legend.

Terror reeks of mediocrity through and through, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It includes an adequate stabbing, and a satisfactory sequence involving a lighting guy getting killed by a light. The plot is a combination of the haunted house movie and your typical slasher flick. The acting is acceptable. Still, I’ll take horror-by-the-numbers over abominations (I still hate you, Eegah) any day.

That sounds just dreadful and I'm happy you watched it instead of me. Funny review though.
