The Wizard of Gore

(1970) ***1/2

Montag the Magnificent puts on a helluva show. For his first trick, he takes a lovely lady from the audience, hypnotizes her and then saws her in half with a chainsaw. She screams in agony, blood splatters liberally in every direction and the audience is dumbfounded. *Snap* It was only a trick! Did that really happen? The “volunteer” gets up unscathed and the crowd roars. That evening we join the woman at a diner sipping coffee. The hypnosis suddenly wears off and she literally falls apart onto the floor, her innards spilling out. It’s gonna be a long night for Flo.

His next volunteer gets a giant metal spike driven into her brain through the ear. There’s no reaction to the first whack. Then suddenly the girl screams in horror as another bloodbath commences. Looking the part of a sadistic lunatic, Montag rips her brains out of the side of her head, making a disturbing slurpy sound. As an added bonus, he pops her eyeballs out of their sockets. *Snap* She’s ok everybody! But not really…

While the cops are their usual incompetent selves, a young couple gets wise to Montag’s unique brand of serial killing. Can they stop him before he jams a sword down another poor victim’s mouth, causing her to puke out her organs and other gross, bloody chunks all over the place? Well actually, no, they’re too late on that one. But can they stop him before he hypnotizes an entire television audience in an attempt to commit mass murder?

What a joyous discovery this depraved film turned out to be! Its weaknesses cannot be ignored - the blood is bright red, the effects are dated, and the acting truly is a crime against humanity. On the plus side, the 70’s score is a winner, the concept is astonishingly original and the gory ambitions truly laudable. Fix the above-mentioned problems and Wizard would be off the charts.

And whaddya know? A remake starring Crispin Glover is in the works…

Ah, Crispin Glover - the "creepy thin man" to outdo all creepy thin men.

Great review, that sounds like terrific fun! It boggles my mind how many horror movies exist that I've never heard of. I think we could do this contest for many years with little repeat. I have at least 400 at home that I've never heard of and it's a delight to pop them in.

JPX - You would love this movie! It's a shame you won't watch it 'cuz it's been reviewed this year.

There were other nasty scenes I didn't mention including a human wine press.

The acting was almost unbearable. Montag was particularly ridiculous.

Wow, this sounds pretty interesting, bad acting and all. Can't wait for the Crispin Glover version.

When I read this a category for next year's 'thon occured to me: flicks recommended by other 'thonners from earlier years. I have caught a couple, of course, but as an actual theme it would be fun.

That is a good theme. Off the top of my head I think of Night of the Lepus, Last Man on Earth, and now I I'd add Frogs and Day of the Animals to the list.

The more I think about it, Wizard of Gore was the goriest pre-Dawn of the Dead movie I've ever seen.

Can I interject with a question?

There can be no repeats? or is that a self-imposed jpx thing?

Self-imposed. You can even watch movies you yourself have watched for the 'thon before, as long as you watch them all the way through and write about them afterwards.

Oh yeah you can totally watch stuff you've watched before. For Horrorthon I just find it more difficult to write a review for a film that I've alreasdy a review for in an earlier Thon.
