i've been reading the comic since it first came out. they've had plans to make it into a movie from day 1. pretty ambitious plan for an unpublished comic, but it's deserving.
If Watchmen achieved one thing, it was showing the world that superhero violence is better when it's rated R. I looked at issue 2 of Kick Ass when it was on the stands but never followed up. Bloody as hell.
Since the writer is Mark Millar, who wrote Wanted, it's not as weird as you might think that they were gunning for the screen early.
