Vintage 1983 Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear Commercial… Toy Story 3 Viral?

From slashfilm, A video appeared online last week on YouTube claiming to be a television commercial from 1983 advertising the Lots-o’-Huggin’. Many of you following the site know that Lotso is one of the new toys/characters in Pixar’s Toy Story 3. The thing is… I’m 99% sure Lotso was a custom creation of Pixar and didn’t actually exist in 1983. Watch the commercial, embedded after the jump, and judge for yourself. Is it real, or Toy Story 3 viral marketing? It’s incredibly well made, from the jingle to the wardrobe, to the VHS-tape appearance… but I vote the latter.

Wow. If you check the YouTube comments it's pretty clear nobody's believing this -- but they're all psyched anyway.

Everyone is discussing this as a viral, but a good one. Nobody cares about the basic deception, like the host MrCrazyCommercial's claim that he had one of these.

But I agree, it seems modern. The video interference is a little too interferish, and somehow Lotso's design is contemporary. I also note that MrCC has only been uploading old commercials for about three weeks (I recognize at least some of the products).

Suddenly I'm thinking about viral marketing... how the "cover" was blown almost immediately, but it's still out there, with pop-culture awareness thrown in. Another level of media self-observation spontaneously generates and thrives. Ah, the internet.
