Pee-Wee movie update

From slashfilm, Over the past few years Paul Reubens, aka Pee-Wee Herman, has been talking up multiple new film projects. One now has Judd Apatow on board as producer, and a script is actively being crafted. It leaps off from the bright, child-like ideas of Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, and is meant to be very much in the spirit of Tim Burton’s film Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure. The other movie was talked up as a darker, more adult Pee-Wee Herman film, but we haven’t heard anything about that in some time. Now, according to the actor, it isn’t going to happen any time soon. He also provides a brief update on the film being produced by Judd Apatow.

I think that's great news! Yay on going forward with the Big Adventure style movie, and "eh" on the darker movie not materializing. Because the appeal of Pee Wee is made from those moments of dark humor worked into the light-hearted tapestry. ("DO YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO SHARE WITH THE REST OF US AMAZING LARRY???") Pee Wee doesn't need dark and/or gritty.

I'm embarrassed to admit this but I've never seen even a minute of Big Top Pee Wee.

So this Judd Apatow fella has 40 Year Old Virgin (good), Knocked Up (never saw) and Funny People (never saw).

I really hope they get it right. The difference between his character in Pee Wee's Big Adventure vs. Pee Wee's Playhouse is that in the former he was a selfish, childish prick. That's where all of the humor stemmed from. The recent appearances I've seen of Paul Reubens (including ahem, Monday Night RAW) aren't too encouraging.

On the plus side he still looks pretty good! I was worried that it would be like Harrison Ford in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Big Top Pee Wee is not worth seeing. Ok, there's one hilarious second when Pee Wee hisses at a midget that almost makes the whole thing worthwhile but overall it's terrible.

I have faith in Judd Apatow. I've seen those flicks and some others; some are hilarious, some less so, but they're all good and they're all evidence that he cares to make comedy with character and originality.

Big Top isn't even on Netflix!

Big Top is unwatchable. Every few years I forget how bad it is (i.e. "It can't be all that bad") and when I pop it is I'm quickly reminded (see also: Head).

Big Top is just dreadful. I'm gonna stay optimistic on the new film since an awesome new Pee Wee film would be, well, awesome!

Funny People is my favorite Apatow film.

Re: Pee Wee, I actually saw Big Adventure the day Jeff and I reunited, and I was kind of terrified of it. There were...extenuating circumstances.
