Death Note
Light Yagami finds a black notebook simply marked Death Note. In no time he discovers the book has certain powers, he has only to write a person's name in the book, think of their face and they die almost instantly of a massive heart attack. Light decides to use the power to rid the world of all evil by killing every criminal. When the thugs start dropping like flies Light's father, the police captain, winds up investigating the case. It seems to be impossible to find the killer since the deaths are all by heart attack so they enlist the help of a super genius only known as L to help solve the crime. Light is unable to eliminate L because he does not know his real name. It becomes a battle of wits between L and Light, each trying to discover the identity of the other.
I found this film while surfing Netflix and the concept sounded interesting to me. Seriously, how do you catch someone who only needs to write a name in a book to kill? That means he could write the name of someone halfway across the world, with no viable connection to him, and kill that person on the spot. In fact the case is so difficult to crack that it takes an eccentric genius and a team of FBI agents 2 movies to finally figure it out(when I found Death Note I noticed there was a Death Note 2 as well so I watched them back to back). I'm sure the writer's of this story spent long hours discussing the outcome. The sheer imagination and calculation that went into finding the source of the murders was mesmerizing. Sure there's a huge ass crappy cgi character hanging around but who cares, the plot is so engaging. Really glad I found this one, well three actually(I just discovered a Death Note 3 is in existence). Great stuff if you dig movies that make you think.

What a bizarre sounding movie! The plot is intriguing but I'm more interested in that crazy CG creature, how does it figure into the film? Nice, strange find, which is what I've come to expect from you.
The big guy is Ryuuk, a Shinigami. The Shinigamis are the ones who bring the death notes. Once you've picked up the death note you can see the Shinigami but it is still invisible to everyone else.
The CGI is certainly peculiar, but the plot sounds pretty awesome. Horrorthon 2011 maybe.
Ha! I just got the Pinky joke even though I read this last night. Good one.
I was also intrigued because I saw that pic first and that thing looks like it could be a big puppet, which would be awesome.
I totally want one of those notebooks! Cheney Rove O'Reilly Beck Palin, adios!
"Nice, strange find, which is what I've come to expect from you."
That does sum up Catfreeek's profile of movies, JPX!
This sounds bizarre - and good. The CGI guy looks pretty excited to be an accessory to murder.
These look great! Are they scary/gory or are they more like detective films?
A little of both Johnny.
Do you know if this is based on the anime, or if the anime is based on this?
I honestly have no idea but my best guess is that the anime came first.
So weird, I was just told to watch this anime recently. Had no idea they made a movie/s. Good find!
