Kevin Smith announces retirement

From cinemablend, In the past year, things have been fairly tumultuous for Kevin Smith. The writer/director, who has one of the more active celebrity Twitter accounts, has been very vocal about his dislike of film criticism and via his Podcasts, has hinted that his next project, the hockey film Hit Somebody, will be his last movie. Now he's made it official.

Speaking after the premiere of his newest film, Red State (read our review here), at the Sundance Film Festival tonight, Smith has confirmed that he will retire as a director following the filming of his next project. According to our source on the inside, the wonderful Katey Rich, he will instead focus on helping other people make movies. Whether this means that he will be serving as a producer or continuing to write is unknown, but we will update this story as we know more.

Though Smith has more than his fair share of critics, I have always enjoyed his films. Even today Clerks is the perfect example of what determination and perseverance can lead to. Dogma is a tremendously well written film about the nature of faith. And hell, Jay and Silent Bob are wonderful characters that earned their popularity. It's a shame it has to end this way, but here's hoping it's actually for the best.

First of all I call bullshit. There's no way his toilet destroying ass is going to stop making movies. But let's humor him and take a look back, shall we?

1994 Clerks - funny and inspired overachiever

1995 Mallrats - not a masterpiece but I enjoy it, own it and have watched it several times

1997 Chasing Amy - ruined by that girl's annoying voice

1999 Dogma - overblown, hit & miss

2001 Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back - I barely remember it

2004 Jersey Girl - horrid

2006 Clerks II - passable

2008 Zack and Miri Make a Porno - one of the worst movies ever made

Conclusion: he should be directing TV shows

Yeah, he'll probably produce for a few years and then announce he's un-retiring to direct something else... I say within five years from now. You heard it here first!

As for me,

Loved Clerks, meh for Mallrats, liked Chasing Amy but yeah what's with her voice, liked Dogma, laughed my ass off at Jay and Silent Bob, Jersey Girl sucks so hard it isn't really a movie and Clerks II also cracked me up. Missed the last one.

I agree with you JSP on all your Kevin Smith reviews. I thought Clerks II was sweet and a good ending for those characters. I HATED Chasing Amy because the Amy character was such an unlikable vomit with an annoying voice - who the hell would chase her? I'd be pushing her out of the room with a broom.

Works for me!

I tried to watch "Clerks" and stopped after ten minutes. Not my thing.
