The Hearse

(1980) ***1/2

Much like Let's Scare Jessica to Death, the Hearse centers around a recovering nutter who tries to escape her sordid past.   Hoping to start life anew, Jane Harding moves from San Francisco to her dead aunt's house in a remote northern California town.  She is welcomed into her new community with thinly veiled rudeness and knowing glances from the townspeople.   Perhaps they don't take kindly to strangers, but more likely it has to do with the old Martin house.  Both the house and her aunt have a history of violence.  To make matters worse, she is constantly being followed by a scary hearse driven by an even scarier man.  And the one person who is kind to her, a handsome stranger named Tom, might not actually exist.

The Hearse is an intense little thriller that is thoroughly intriguing up until the very end.   Unfortunately, just as I was dusting off the old **** stamp, I was smacked in the head with the mother of all stupid endings.

Still worthy though.
