(2006) ***
A group of friends learn that a mutual friend has died a mysterious death that mirrors the manner in which his character died in a new, unreleased videogame (i.e., Stay Alive). The game is based on the true story of a 19th century noblewoman called “the Blood Countess”.
Unable to resist the allure of playing an untested game, the nerds convene for a night of gaming and begin a life and death struggle. The line between the game and real word begins to blur and it soon becomes apparent that those who die in the game meet a similar fate in real life. Will they be able to defeat the evil Blood Countess before they all die? Well of course, silly goose.
Stay Alive is a serviceable horror film that borrows heavily form better horror films such as The Ring and Silent Hill. Despite obvious plagiarism, this film is better than I would’ve expected with some genuinely creepy deaths. I didn’t hate the characters and the film remained bleak and dangerous. The videogame Stay Alive looked pretty damn cool and I wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t now exist.
This film also answers the question; will Frankie Muniz be able to move beyond his Malcolm in the Middle typecasting? The answer is no. Seeing him in the film is a complete distraction. Adding insult to injury he wears this stupid visor upside down THE ENTIRE TIME. Even I wanted to give him a wedgie.
First rule of Horrorthon is: watch horror movies. Second rule of Horrorthon is: write about it. Warn us. Tempt us. The one who watches the most movies in 31 days wins. There is no prize.
