I have to admit, I've never heard of this person

Well this is some sad news. Barry Nelson, the first guy that played James Bond on screen, died earlier this week in Bucks County, Pennsylvania at the age of 89.

He signed onto MGM in the early 40’s where he had many film roles including SHADOW OF THE THIN MAN and JOHNNY EAGER. Nelson also played as James Bond in the TV adaptation of CASINO ROYALE in 1954.

Nelson also appeared in other films such as AIRPORT and THE SHINING, and he also appeared on some TV shows such as MURDER, SHE WROTE, DALLAS, and MAGNUM P.I.

Man, I didn't even know they ever did Bond for TV. In the 50's? Is this some weird alternate reality thing like the club library in "The Breathing Method?"
