Rowan Atkinson Takes on Dickens

From iwatchstuff, Director Peter Howitt and his producing partner Richard Johns are set to make a new version of the Charles Dickens classic David Copperfield that Johns claims will break the mold of mannered, reverential Dickens adaptations. "With Dickens," Johns said, "filmmakers have been trapped in this place where you have caricatured characters, but Peter wants to deal with them like real people."

Naturally, their mind went to Mr. Bean. Rowan Atkinson will play Mr. Micawber, Copperfield's landlord. As described, Atkinson will play the part not as a caricature but as a real person, assuming this "real person" is a bumbling retard making constant wide-eyed stares and strange noises.

I have a patient that looks identical to Mr. Bean (and Octo will tell you that when I say someone looks like someone, I'm dead on)and I struggle in my therapy sessions not to laugh at him. I just want to say, "Don't be sad, just accidentally do something silly."

I DO support JPX's claim, based on history. His dad, for instance, looks exactly like Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead.

My favorite Rowan Atkinson role is in The Tall Guy, in which he plays a successful stage comedian whose act is very Mr. Bean -- but offstage he's a mean bastard making everyone around him visible.
