I’ve always liked this episode because the first time I saw it I didn’t know it was Star Trek right away. I was channel surfing or I’d just turned on the TV, and the teaser opens on the 1969 Air Force base. In those opening seconds, I was hoping these guys would be dealing with some sci-fi threat and it wasn’t some boring movie about the Air Force. Sure enough, they start radioing about some mysterious ship in the skies, and then they show us – the Enterprise! Yay.

I seem to recall the Enterprise is actually flying with daytime sky behind it…has anyone addressed that? Enterprise in atmo? Jordan, you on today?

Yo.

Yes, you see the Enterprise "against" the sky (really, through the sky) at the beginning.

It's in the grand sci-fi tradition of "that big thing back there" which (in this subcategory) includes the view of the second Death Star in the daytime sky over Endor's moon. (Just like we see our moon during the day.) I remember some idiot in high school objecting. But then, I remember the third time I saw Jedi there was a guy with us who reacted to the opening shot (after the pan down) by observing, "Blown-up Death Star" (prompting me to nearly yell out, "Can't you read?"
