Lots of "Child's Play" Remake Details

From worstpreviews, Several months ago, during the press junket for "Martian Child," producer David Kirschner revealed that a remake of the 1998 "Child's Play" was in the works. Now, AICN caught up with Kirschner and creator Don Mancini to discuss the 20th Anniversary DVD release of the original movie and to dig up some details about the remake.

Mancini has previously directed "Seed of Chucky" and has written all five "Chucky" films. He will step behind the camera again to helm the remake, in addition to writing it.

According to Kirschner, there are no plans to replace Brad Dourif as the voice of the main character. "No, no, it's going to be Brad," he said, with Mancini adding: "Who would you get that's better? David and I talk about this a lot, that because he's a puppet, there's an aspect of him that feels like he's an animated character, so his voice is such an immense part of it as well as what he looks like. It's almost like recasting Homer Simpson or something. If you could recast it, you would want the actor to sound kind of like it, but it would feel weird to just be completely different I think."

While the story is being kept a secret, Mancici revealed that the new film will use mostly puppetry, be an origin story, and will be more scary than funny. "I think what we are mainly responding to, David and I, is the will of the fans, which is really telling us that they want to see a scary Chucky movie again. They want to go back to the straightforward horror rather than the horror comedy," he said.

Kirschner added: "I think Don has really created some really clever twists and expectations that a fan of the first 'Child's Play' film, you will be surprised and shocked by, but it will follow I think very closely a lot of the first film against twists and turns that Don has put into it that an audience thinks it is going to go one way and we will go another even though the story is pretty similar."

At this point, everyone is working out deals with Universal. As much as they would love to have the film ready by next year, Kirschner believes it will be more like the Fall of 2010.
