The ongoing "Spider-Man" strip is wearing me out...but I can't seem to look away.
The boredom of that first panel (the artist isn't enjoying it any more than we are) is profound.
But, this strip makes me realize that the most amazing accomplishment of the Spider-Man movies may have simply been of making that ridiculous "web-swinging" conceit actually look plausible.
I mean, I live in New York, right? When I look out my window (or upwards at the buildings while I'm walking around in Midtown or downtown) and try to envision somebody actually getting around the city like that is ludicrous, even allowing for the unreasonable properties of the webbing (which instantly bonds to everything, is as strong as steel, and then evaporates leaving no trace at all). I mean, there aren't nearly enough tall buildings in nearly enough of a dense concentration (except maybe in the densest sections of Sixth Avenue or Wall Street) for Spider-Man to actually travel like that. Just walking around would be a lot faster, I think. (Daredevil, same remarks.) But the movies make it look like it makes sense.
Or maybe not. I don't know. These "Spider-Man" newspaper strips make nothing seem worthwhile.
Yes! This is why I love you, Jordan. I have always marveled at the ridiculous notion that Spider-Man could "swing" through the city effortlessly. Granted I've been to NYC perhaps 6 times in my life but even I was aware that when you look up in Manhattan you generally wee sky. The idea that Spider-Man could travel with his web-slinging never made sense to me.
