Octo, it's the first Death Star! Those are smoke clouds, man.
Not that the image is a paragon of accuracy, but I disagree.
They're smoke clouds! Look how they extend left to right.
I'm laughing because I can envision all kinds of "let me get a closer look at that" scenarios.
You're wrong. They don't go from left to right. The shape of the edges between dark and light parts of the drawing within the circle described by the DS completely different from the light/dark edges outside the circle. Inside the circle the edge is a jagged collection of straight edges, like the unbuilt levels of the structure. In some of the gaps you can see the color of the space background, in other gaps you can see further interior levels of Death Star, especially in the upper hemisphere, on the right, just above the equatorial line. The color inside is the same color as the shaded part of the sphere on the lower left half, i. e. Death Star in shadow. Putting aside the question of smoke in space (mostly because I have no idea what that red spirally thing is just beneath the left X-wing) why would the smoke concealing the same parts of the Death Star that aren't built in ROJ?
I'm wrong; you're right.
I didn't realize there was a larger version behind a hyperlink; once I looked at the bigger image I immediately saw my mistake.
