Box office reveals that people like stupid movies

From Darkhorizons, “Will Ferrell's nascar comedy "Talladega Nights" continues to be the #1 film in it's second week out. Even the new choreographed dance film "Step Up" wasn't able to quite compete. The 9/11 based drama "World Trade Center" that deals directly with the collapse of the two towers opened with a decent draw despite it's subject matter. The animated "Barnyard" also continues to do well in it's second week, only moving down a few spots which isn't bad compared to "Miami Vice" that went from #4 last week to nearly dropping off the list entirely. The end-of-the-world ghost film "Pulse" opens to please the horror crowd, but only manages just to pull in over $8 million. Jack Sparrow continues to be entertaining enough to keep "Pirates of the Caribbean 2" on the list in it's 6th week of release. And the new kid-superhero film "Zoom" has likely not surpassed the results it's execs were hoping for with a box office result of $4,600,000. I'm sure they may have almost at least paid off Tim Allen's paycheck with that.

Next week is August 18th, and if you have turned on the TV, read a newspaper, surfed the net, or just talked with your friends you have likely already heard about the upcoming "Snakes on a Plane". Now don't get me wrong, the film's concept is one of the worst plots I have heard in a long time: however, you have to admit that the advertising on this film has been top notch. Not only is the film honest enough to give you a title that tells you exactly what you should be expecting, but the Trailers and TV spots have been hilarious, and you can even use a special internet site to set up one of your friends with an automated and brilliantly custom tailored call from Samuel L. Jackson, inviting him to come see the movie "or else". You know what? The movie's going to be entertaining. Doesn't have to be Oscar material. I'm going. I hope everyone follows suit. It's either that or Ed Norton's new drama/thriller "The Illusionist". It's from the folks who gave us Crash, so if you are looking to find something a little more tastefully done, then you have something to look forward to this upcoming weekend as well. “
