The Loved Ones

 (2009) ****

Lola asks Brent to the prom but he turns her down, she does not deal with rejection very well at all. Brent gets kidnapped by Lola’s Daddy and finds himself amidst a twisted surreal world filled with torture and insanity. Brent spends his days tied to a chair at the mercy of Lola and her weird Father. It’s really Lola running the whole show here, Daddy just does what he is told, anything to please his little princess. Brent gets loose at one point and makes a run for it but he doesn’t get past the yard. Once recaptured they nail his feet to the floor to ensure he stays put. He is then subjected to a mock prom in which he and Lola are the king in Queen but that is far from the worst of it. He soon learns that unless he can break free he is to suffer the fate of the victims preceding him who are now home-lobotomized basement dwellers.

Could Australia be the new home of extremist horror? If this film is any indication, they are off to a running start. Lola is one evil bitch, no wonder no one wants to date her. There is something to be said about the reversed roles in this film. We are so accustomed to the tortured female victim that it’s almost refreshing, for lack of a better word, to see a female sticking it to a guy for once. We are also introduced to the family of another of Lola’s victims in a sidespin that gives welcomed relief from the Brent/Lola situation. I should also mention that there are some very satisfying pipe in the ass moments that make it all worth while.

i like the gender reversal but still wouldn't like the torture part.

I miss the good old days when all men had to worry about was which pointy object to use when torturing and killing their women. I'm kidding, obviously, I firmly believe men and women should do the torturing and be tortured equally!

I think Hostel broke that ground pretty well (shiver).

I'm kind of amused by anyone taking the prom so seriously. And I always wonder about the value of "home-lobotomized basement dwellers" (excellent phrase, that). I mean, you still have to feed 'em, and what do you get out of it?

Well she would always have a date handy in a pinch, right;)

I guess... for one of those basement proms. However I'd be worried that even a hot one wouldn't be too impressive at a public gathering.

Unless they're cleaning or doing my laundry I really can't see much use for the lobotomized basement dwellers.

Haha DCD now that would be ideal.
