The Grudge

(2004)
*** (first viewing)
*1/2 (additional viewings)

Karen Davis is studying abroad in Japan and volunteering her time looking after the mentally disabled. One call takes her to a house with a sordid past. She sees a ghost and after some research at the local library, learns that everyone who has been in the house - for ANY reason, ends up dying. We see a number of these victims, as they are haunted by the creepy Japanese girl ghost. Will Karen be able to break the pattern?

Okay, I know I've broken protocol by assigning two different star ratings to one film, but my opinion of this movie really was different the second time I saw it. The first time, 5 years ago, my then-girlfriend (now wife) and I were genuinely freaked out by the creepy girl and her "I've got something stuck in my throat" moan. Seeing it the second time, I was so freaking bored! There isn't anything really scary in this movie. Just a Japanese girl with very black hair, and her mouth agape, with that weird moan.

Sadly I had the same experience when I watched the superior JUON again. I guess sometimes you can only be really scared once. I watched The Ring a few times and it always scared me, I wonder if it still would?

Trevor - have you watched the original? Ju-on? That one scared me a lot last year. I haven't re-watched it, but I could see where the first time is really the kicker with that flick.

I even found the original Ju-on scary on a second viewing. The Grudge is a typical weak copy.
