Pixar Announces "Brave" and "Monsters, Inc 2" for 2012

From worstpreviews, Disney has just announced that Pixar will be moving forward with two new animated movies; "Brave," which is scheduled to hit theaters on June 15th, 2012, and a "Monsters, Inc" sequel, which is set for November 16th, 2012.

"Brave," once known as "The Bear and the Bow," is written and directed by Brenda Chapman (Cars) and features the voices of Reese Witherspoon and Billy Connolly in a tale of an impulsive princess (Witherspoon) who aims to shed her royal ties and become the world's first, great female archer. It is the company's first-ever female-driven pic.

"Monsters, Inc," directed by Pete Docter, grossed $525 million worldwide after its release in November 2001. The film will become only the third Disney/Pixar property to get a sequel. The others are "Toy Story" and "Cars."

That's all great. Monsters Inc. is among my top fave Pixar flicks (not that I've ever bothered to rank them... hmm, I'll put The Incredibles at the top), so I'm amped to see more monsters.

And while I'm behind Pixar on pretty much anything they want to do, here's a salient point from Willa Paskin at Slate:

"Not to harsh on Pixar too harshly, especially since I have all the faith in the world that The Bear and The Bow will be fantastic, but it's slightly puzzling that Merida, their first female protagonist, is a princess. As Linda Holmes at NPR puts it, “I have nothing against princesses. I have nothing against movies with princesses. But don't the Disney princesses pretty much have us covered? [Pixar parent company Disney even has two more princess films, the controversial The Princess and The Frog and Rapunzel, coming out in the next year] If we had to wait for your thirteenth movie for you to make one with a girl at the center, couldn't you have chosen something for her to be that could compete with plucky robots and adventurous space toys?” In other words, little girls already have lots of role models who wear tiaras and shiny pink dresses. Hopefully the new Pixar movies will show them a heroine who does other things, too."

I look forward to the day when Zack realizes there's a movie that's simply called Cars.
