Wrestlemaniac

(2006) **1/2

Wrestler Rey Misterio plays El Mascarado a notorious Mexican wrestler who was banished to the ghost town La Sangre de Dios after going mad. The wrestler had apparently begun killing his opponents and ripping their faces off. After several failed attempts to kill El Mascarado they banish him instead, or so the legend goes anyway. All this is told to us by a strange little old guy that the main characters run into while driving a van through Mexico looking for a location to shoot a low-budget porn film. Alphonse, Steve, Dallas, Debbie, Daisy & Jimbo get lost and after getting a stern warning from the crazy old coot decide to drive through Sangre de Dios anyway. Alphonse drives the van into a huge rock in the road while smoking some loco weed that the old guy gave him and the van breaks down in the ghost town.

They decide to shoot some porn footage in town and soon discover they are not alone after Steve catches a mysterious shadow on film. One by one members of the group begin to disappear only to be discovered later bloody and faceless. Steve, being a huge wrestling fan figures out what needs to be done to stop the monster. They just need to pull his mask off forcing him into retirement. Yeah right, much easier said then done, El Mascarado is one big pissed off dude.

The premise is silly, the characters are dumb and the plot is weak. I loved every minute of it. The only reason I didn't give it 3 stars or more is because we never really get to see the big guy actually wrestle with anyone. The movie was screaming for a wrestling match in the middle somewhere and it almost gives it to us at one point. Sadly it never gives up the goods. Otherwise I thought this was a fun ride. However, it was definitely a movie made specifically for men. There are numerous close ups of scantily clad butts, boob shots and a moment where one chick unnecessarily gets her shorts ripped off. This of course leaves her running around in her underwear. Then there's this pose.

Tons of blood for the gore fans amongst us. Overall I'd say this was fun and different. JSP and HS should both watch it just on principle. I mean what are the odds of finding a maniac wrestling movie just in time for Horrorthon, really.

Fascinating. I've always been a fan of Rey Mysterio's. That guy can fucking FLY.

And I'm a fan of unnecessary panty shots.

Was this from WWE Films?

You had me at that last picture. Sounds like a winner to me!

I did a little subgenre thing about the gratuitous ripping off of pants. Now I can add to the list!
