I hate these goddamned remastered TOS episodes so much!

Every time they do another one I watch it and think, "come on; it's cool; it's not so bad," and within two minutes I'm yelling "No, no, no! You IDIOTS!" at something they did.

How often does it happen that somebody spends a tremendous amount of time, money and effort at doing a really elaborate job of the wrong thing?

• The Blade Runner narration
• Those Back to the Future VHS boxed sets
• The people who spent $50 thousand to paint my parents' building lobby a stupid color
• The remastered TOS episodes

Ha! My first big laugh of the day!

I was sure you were going to list, the SW Special Editions.

What did they do to the Back to the Future sets?

Jordan said...

No, because the Special Editions are too interesting and just too good. I happen to love them, actually. My only objection is that he makes it nearly impossible to see the originals (except on those transcoded discs copied from the '80s laserdiscs).

There really isn't anything I object to in the Special Editions except:

1) Greedo (barely) shooting first
2) Those "funny" droid/jawa antics as we enter Mos Eisley
3) I actually prefer the original song from Jabba's palace
4) Hayden Christiansen at the end

I completely agree with your opinion on the Special Editions. I could do without that Jabba dance number and I'll always hate Salacious Crumb, but I love those damn movies.

5) "Tell my stardestroyer to prepare for my arrival" (vs. "Bring my shuttle")
6) Messed-up music cue with lightsaber coming out of the snow, thanks to new shots of the creature screwing up the timing
7) He didn't fix the "plastic stick" appearance of Ben's lightsaber in that one shot
8) I would love to see a Christopher-Lee-in-Clones-style complete re-do of Vader vs. Obi-Wan, where they're both leaping off the ceiling and fighting (but with it still being Alec Guiness' head and voice and lines of dialogue).

I've always liked the stateliness of that duel. I'm not sure that I wouldn't group the Special Editions in with Jordan's parents lobby etc. But I'm probably reacting more to the tricky availability of the originals.

And, of course, that Dewback!

Luke still screams, "Carrie!" to Leia when he returns from blowing up the Deat Star. I'm surprised Lucas never fixed that.

Jordan said...

He insists he's yelling "Leia!"

There's one of those in the beginning of "Dawn of the Dead" (original) where she calls him by the actor name. In the TV studio.

Viz. the stateliness of the duel: I think this is one of the few cases where the re-do I'm suggesting is 100% legit, since that duel is genuinely inconsistent with what we see elsewhere in the original trilogy. In other words, Vader can fight better than that (he's leaping around in Empire) and Obi-Wan has GOT to be able to if we're going to accept the scene at all (since it's written as a legitimate duel). The prequels make clear (with Yoda, Dooku and Palpatine) that being strong with the force = amazing swordfighting no matter how old/small you are.

JPX said...

I watched A New Hope recently and I remember thinking that the duel was pretty weak (even though as a kid I found it thrilling). In that great making of Star Wars book they discuss how much practice the two actors did for that scene. What were they practicing? They fight like I did when I was a kid pretending to have a sword fight. Its almost like they're moving in slow motion.

No way, man, he definitely yells, "Carrie!"

I could also do without half a Biggs scene.

Fuck "Biggs" anyway. The whole idea just doesn't work; he knew that in 1977.

(Except for the girl stepping into the foreground with the binoculars and gazing at the sky as he tips the camera up.)

BTW right on JPX.

it always sounded to me like luke was shouting "HEY!"

and jordan, thanks for (5) -- it's a pretty small thing but it drives me nuts every time i see the SE ESB.

he's just lost luke after a heated confrontation and is steaming mad. "bring my shuttle." just barely keeping his seething anger in check. if anyone so much as utters "but sir!" they're getting their head ripped off.

the altered line sucks in several ways. the awesome brevity is gone. he doesn't sound anywhere near pissed anymore. and, infuriating me the most, he speaks it in time with the john williams score. it's like for two seconds we're watching ESB the musical.

Jordan said...

I never noticed that he's in tempo with the music. Too bad...

I've got absolutely nothing to add here except that I really enjoyed this discussion. And I agree with every single comment - even the ones that contradict each other.

It's certainly true that the Kenobi/Darth duel in SW is pretty tame compared to those in ESB and Jedi. My "stateliness" comment could probably be taken as a cop-out excuse as much as any kind of case to keep it the way it is. But I still love it.

It's a completely chronastic affair. The notion of sequels was merely a murky possibility, the idea of better duels just a glint in the eye. Obi-Wan calls Vader "Darth" instead of Anakin or Vader, like its his name. So many things still to work out.

There's a series of quick moves the two combatants make right after Han says he hopes the old man got the tractor beam out of commission. Compared to the meaty fights that follow, it's really just a dash of pepper, but it still sends me.

Maybe Darth was just holding back because he got his ass kicked so hard by Obi-Wan the last time.

JPX said...

Yet Darth is pretty agile in ESB - remember him flying down that staircase? I like the saber fight in ESB, my fave of the original trilogy.

Jordan said...

What does "chronastic" mean? "Anachronistic"?

Jordan said...

The ESB duel is really good. It's very well timed (as is the entire third act of the movie).

"Impressive." WHAM! "Most impressive."
