Mo (The Boxer's Omen)

This film starts out looking deceptively normal like this

Then takes a turn to the weirds

(1983) ***

1983? No way, this film looks like something right out of the late 60's or early '70's. It's so hard to believe I had to check the date twice to make sure I wasn't looking at a remake (like they could or would remake this). It has got to be the strangest film I've ever seen in my life and that's saying a lot.

Think they look good now? Wait until you see them pressed up against the glass.

I'm forever blowing bubbles...

Aerobics anyone?

Xiong's brother is wounded and left crippled after a kick-boxing bout. He seeks to avenge his brother but first he must deal with a nasty curse that is burdening his family. Xiong discovers his fate is intertwined with a weird priest of a sort that is identical to him. He begins hallucinating and let me tell you, this guy really knows how to hallucinate too! Demonic bats, rabid alligator skulls, scary painted dudes with booming voices, Budda coming to life and that's not even the half of it. Ever see a man vomit an eel?

Word!

Is this the Star Trek set?

There are a few long drawn out scenes that make the film lag a little. Like the unguided tour of the streets of Hong Kong that seems like home video footage thrown in as a time filler. Although these boring segments are totally forgivable since you need the down time to try and piece together the crazy shit you just saw in the scenes prior. Poor stop motion animation, cheesy effects, bizarre costumes and freaky lights. It's a visual mind fuck and I enjoyed it thoroughly. If I had to sum up this film in two words I would simply say, indescribably weird.

Obscure enough Jordan?

Maybe you should start your own movie rental company Cat! The Obscure and Gory.
