Countdown to Horrorthon Contest! 4 days to go: What are you watching?

Four days to go! FOUR DAYS TO GO!!!

I want to give some shouts to some recent additions to the older posts.

Johnny Sweatpants threw down a fat list of genres and subgenres on the Theme and Sub-theme contest. He's made some noise about compiling a list of horror themes that has a place for every horror movie, and I think he's the one to do it.

50PageMcGee posted his 2010 Best Ofs on the Best Ofs contest, and apparently his little feelings were hurt because he already posted his in January (I checked, but only November and December). I can't judge him for tardiness because I posted a 2010 review freakin' yesterday. If you check his original post you can see all the comments afterwards from people wondering what's up with the trailing-off of Horrorthon. Makes me feel all the better about our new deadline.

While I was poking around in the archives, I came across another late comment that I bet nobody saw, here on JPX's post about Creature Double Feature... from one of the website's artists. Thanks for commenting, Hartter! Are you still tuning in? Checking out the CDF site I realized the movie with the Gritted Teeth Lady must be somewhere on their movie list. How wonderful and terrifying!

Anyway, for today's contest I thought I'd veer off the horror chatter and get into some plain old chatter. I suggested in my Super Hero Reviewapalooza that we should dialogue more about the movies we see and the TV we like to watch. Something quick and informal, just to put good stuff on each other's radar during the rest of the year. What I imagine is a periodic What Are You Watching? post, which anyone can do. If you just got obsessed with a new show on Animal Planet, let us know in a What Are You Watching post, and then everyone else can reveal what they've latched onto recently in the comments.

How about it, Horrorthonners? You've got four more days as civilians. What Are You Watching?

Since this is the first one of these, I'm also going to mention some stuff I watched that isn't on anymore.

Every now and then I watch the whole run of Firefly again.

Someday everybody should watch all of Six Feet Under.

I have all of the animated Avatar: The Last Airbender and I still check those out.

Last summer Julie and I were junkies for the new Battlestar Galactica.

Here's some current stuff:

I loooove The Venture Brothers on Adult Swim. (If you look in the nose of the skull pic I posted, you can see the brothers high-fiving each other).

Julie and I watched Dexter avidly through season 4, then we dropped Showtime and have yet to catch up on season 5. Season 6 is starting any day now.

Our regular sit-com staples revolve around Community and Modern Family. We used to watch The Office and 30 Rock too, but we drifted away from them and in our absence it seems 30 Rock has jumped the shark. We went to get back into it and almost never laughed.

I get most of my news from The Daily Show with John Stewart.

And Young Justice finally came back after looping its intial 9 episodes over and over. I love the DC animated universe. Except Teen Titans.

DERR! I forgot to mention that 50P and I saw Drive tonight and I thought it was pretty damn good. Moody, stylish, violent. Pared-down in a cool way.

And after getting all gooey for that trailer I read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in a few days and then moved on to The Girl Who Played with Fire, which so far is actually better than the first one.

About a month ago I concluded that I never watch television anymore so I pared down my cable to the absolute basic channels just so I can watch the news (it also saves me $40/month). I find myself watching TV on DVD these days, or just movies. Over the summer I watched 4 seasons of Alfred Hitchcock Presents – terrific stuff! I also watched about 50 film noirs (1940s is my favorite time period). I would be lying if I didn’t admit that I got into a Love Boat/CHIPs thing as well (did I just admit that?).

I watched "Donkey Punch" last night in anticipation of Horrorthon - it's a good, dark, "predicament".

Breaking Bad, which only has 2 more episodes this season, soon to be replaced on our watch list by The Walking Dead.

2 new horror series are coming out, American Horror Story on FX premiers October 5th and Bedlam on BBC will be out in February I believe. Both look interesting enough for me to give them a go.

I am watching Project Runway (Tony will have no part of it). Also I am slowly getting up to date with Fringe via Netflix.

In movies, we recently watched True Grit, Red Riding Hood, Beauty and the Beast: A Dark Tale (Horrible, but the evil witch is hysterically bad), Irreversible, Rango & The Town.

Tony likes to go to sleep to horror every night. Often that means I am fading off whilst listening to desperate screams, gurgling death chokes, ominous music and/or pleading for mercy. It took some getting used to and these things often invade my dreams. Perhaps that explains why I can watch anything, in my dreams I've seen much worse and they almost always involve me.

oh, super fun!

if jpx can fess up about love boat/chips, then i can admit that although i don't watch glee, i somehow got sucked into the glee project this summer.

agree with octopunk about firefly, six feet under, and avatar the last airbender (series not movie).

catfreeek, i watched the first couple episodes of breaking bad, amazingly well done and extremely tense.

finally watched (and loved) arrested development.

now watching 30rock, into season 3, sorry to hear it jumps the shark.

reading wise, just finished "the girl who kicked the hornet's nest" sunday, looking forward to starting keith richards' memoir.

I watched Arrested Development over the winter, loved it too. Tony & I followed Six Feet Under when it aired. I finally caught up on 30 Rock. I've also been Netflix watching Being Human, Life on Mars (finished the American version now watching the British one)for all of us who grew up in the 70's, Life on Mars is a major winner.

thanks for mentioning british tv, catfreeek, that reminds me to recommend "sherlock," an updated and well-made series (3 episodes to date) riffing on the sherlock holmes canon. the main actors in sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman) will also be in the hobbit movie.

I got so sucked into Death Note I was depressed when I reached the last episode.

The only other shows I've had any interest in lately are Breaking Bad, Dexter and um... Love Boat and CHiPs.

I've heard good thinks about that Sherlock. I love Arrested Development too, but when I tried to rewatch it with Julie I had this brilliant idea to stagger it with BSG. Our interest in watching Cylons vs. Humans quickly overshadowed Development and I took it out of rotation. I think we got through one disc.

We figured out a few years ago that committing to any show is hard for us. That being said I will (blushingly) admit that I have watched the past several seasons of Biggest Loser followed by Parenthood.

But the show I'd say we watch the most - because it plays in loops on a couple of channels - is Criminal Minds. Damn, I love that show.

Saturday night we stayed up until 1am watching The Others with Nicole Kidman. Even knowing the "twist", that movie still holds up as all sorts of creepy. Got me in the mood for Horrorthon, that's for sure!

Regarding the genre list, originally I was thinking it would be cool to include various icons to illustrate the genre in the reviews (for example a pentagram would indicate a Satan movie etc.)

The best thing about Love Boat is the anticipation of who is going to guest star. It's like a slot machine. Sometimes you get someone annoying like Zsa Zsa Gabor and other times you hit the jackpot with Vincent Price or Don Knotts.

Catfreeek said...

I love Criminal Minds!

JSP, did I tell you Death Note was great or what? You should watch the movies now, I think they hold up pretty well. The dude that plays L is perfect!

Johnny Sweatpants said...

You're right Catfreeek! Also I just noticed the animated Death Note: Visions of a God and Death Note: L's Successors. Have you seen either of those?

i haven't gotten as deep into watching this year as i have in years past. i binged on arrested development and mi-5 a little, earlier in the year. and like octopunk, i make a lot of return visits to the deep well that is Firefly/Serenity.

the show i've gotten the most excitement out of over the last year is definitely Archer. i'd normally wait the 10 days and watch the episodes on Hulu, but the new season started a couple weeks back and i've bought the first two episodes on iTunes. quotable and hilarious. frikkin love that show.

of course, horrorthon always coincides with the start of hockey season, which means, in addition to viewing time lost to work and gigging, i'm also going to have to take nights off to watch games. i think i'm going to stop aiming for 31 movies (which i've been able to successfully watch the last three years, but haven't been able to successfully review the last three years) and go for a more conservative total.

anything to stave off burn-out, which seems to be everyone's problem these days.

i felt a little more mild toward Drive. i liked the camera work, for the most part. the bloody stuff packs a wallop. there wasn't a lot of dialogue, but i liked people's face-acting, especially ron perelman's -- a lot of good stuff with expressions. the driving sequences (chases, montages) were all really good. also, i think i'd like the soundtrack, although there were moments i didn't like what was playing over what. plus, that's an impressively short part to have christina hendricks play.

that said, i object to the designation of the movie as "noir". i spoke about it with a friend afterwards who said, "it's almost like the director almost didn't have the balls to be 'ugly,'" and that kind of sums it up for me -- as if the bloody stuff evokes the trappings of darkness, but the movie itself feels too easy to be noir. it's like candy martin scorsese.

Oh fuck! I forgot about Archer. I love that show.

Octo I believe your gritted teeth lady is in the film Black Sabbath. It's available on Netflix instant watch or dvd. It was really bugging me, I knew it was somewhere in my brain.

Catfreeek said...

JSP, I haven't watched those yet, but I will.

Catfreeek said...

GrittedTeeth Woman still packs a punch too, if you as me.

DKC said...

Whoa. Creeptastic! Still don't remember it though...

Octopunk said...

Ahhhhhhhh!!! It's herrrrr!

Wow, thanks Cat. How did you find it?

Catfreeek said...

I kept picking at my mental files, like a nasty zit, it finally popped and I remembered. We're actually rewatching it now, just cause it's good.

Catfreeek said...

Octo, you have got to add it to your queue this year.

Catfreeek said...

DCD, you should too, maybe it'll spark that horrific memory.

DKC said...

Totally! Does that site have whole movies or are you finding it a different way?

Catfreeek said...

It's on Netflix also but the entire movie is on that site as well.
