High Tension

(2005) ****

Two young girls drive to a remote country house to visit family and study for exams. Then bad stuff happens...

It's astounding that a french movie is far and beyond the best horror film I've seen this year. And it's all so simple! What scares me to the core? It's not an unstoppable killing machine. It's not satanic cults. And it's certainly not vampires, zombies, ghosts or possessed dolls. The answer: a fat creepy pervert who knocks on your door in the middle of the night and proceeds to slaughter your family. This killer is terrifying and real, twisted and remorseless. The slayings are gruesome, unapologetic, vicious. When one of the girls is tied up and taken away in a filthy pickup truck, it's up to her friend to rescue her.

Warning: I would never normally recommend this but an otherwise flawless tale of horror is all but ruined by a tacked on surprise ending. As soon as things seem wrapped up, shut the movie off and spare yourself the disappointment of the last 10 minutes. I was furious about it and considered lowering my rating but then I had to admit that the damege was done. This movie made me lock my front door at night, the ultimate goal of any horror flick. C'est incroyable!

I've been tring to get Summerisle to watch this damn thing for literally 1 year! It's true, the big "twist" is unnecessary, but it doesn't detract from an almost perfect slasher film.
