The Omen

(1976) *****

Reviewing the Omen is a daunting task as it's one of the most critically acclaimed horror films of all time. It's also one of my personal favorites. Robert Thome (Gregory Peck) plays an ambassador who replaces his stillborn baby with an adopted son for the sake of his wife's stability. At Damien's 5th birthday, things get weird when his nanny hangs herself in front of all to see in an unforgettable scene. The vacant look in her eye and eerie smile haunted me for years. Peck is perfectly cast as a man who is slowly forced to come to terms with the possibility that the devil walks the earth in the form of his own son.

The Omen is a tremendous achievement that has aged like a fine wine over the years. Best of all, it boasts a chilling musical score, so powerful it can turn a scene of a man tying his shoes into a nightmare of Biblical proportions. Relentless, timeless classic.
