Seed of Chucky

(2004) **1/2

So it seems that Chucky’s back again though I don’t remember him ever really going away. Along for the killing spree this time is wife Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly slumming it again) and wussy son Glen (who steals the movie).

Director Dan Mancini gets a lot of (undue?) praise for reviving a dead franchise and he’s really comfortable at the helm. Fortunately he makes no apologies for the film and treats it just seriously enough to make it a fun viewing. He seems to make the best of what he has to work with. At the heart of the story we find Chucky coming to terms with who he is and what he’s all about. Really makes you think. No wait, no it doesn’t. Not at all.

I’ve never fully embraced the Chucky movies, primarily because I find his voice and in-my-face attitude irritating. And call me old fashioned but watching dolls covered in blood make out and urinate makes me a little uncomfortable.

This was never a great franchise, particularly parts 2 & 3, but as you note I think the director has done a great job with both Bride and Seed of Chucky. He realized that it's a stupid premise to begin with and rather than attempt to make it scary, he just goes with the absurdity of the idea and makes a fun, silly romp.
