Joss Whedon on Wonder Woman
From Iwatchstuff, "Empire had the opportunity to talk to Joss Whedon about the future of Serenity and his progress on a Wonder Woman script. Because of its poor box office showing, he says, Serenity probably won't see a sequel for a while, if ever. Wonder Woman, on the other hand, is a work-in-progress:
I am still writing Wonder Woman. It is very awesome but incredibly unfinished, but I should be finishing that in a little while and then I'll have a better idea of which film is actually going into production. But I can tell you that the film will be about introducing you to Wonder Woman. She'll be wearing the outfit and there will be the bracelets, the golden lasso and Greek gods. She comes from a civilisation where she's rather perfect, so she's the opposite to Buffy in many ways, but she's going through an adolescent rite of passage because she's new to the world. For me, the best news to come from the interview (besides that the script is "awesome") was that Wonder Woman will be wearing the outfit-- bracelets, lasso and all. To try to update it would not only disrespect the comic creators and piss-off comic fans, but also mess with a lot of my early sexual fantasies, many of which I still "use" today. Which is why I'm also campaigning for Wonder Woman to be played by my seventh grade teacher, Mrs. Dennison."

I have NEVER cared about this comic book character.
As I was wandering through possible pix of WW to post here, I was wondering why I've always felt the same way. I watched the Linda Carter Wonder Woman all the time, but I can't say I ever formed any kind of connection with it, except maybe the funny notion of spinning around and exploding into your costume. (I remember they didn't do the explosion thing right away, they started with this weird spinning thing where the images overlapped and slo-mo'd or something. The explosion was better.)
I also recall watching the Cathy Lee Crosby pilot -- which is actual historical proof that fans will get pissed off if you change the costume (as if we needed proof of that.
Maybe it's because she's DC, which means she's this feminine ideal from the 40's and 50's. Or maybe it's how that same ideal was nominally about having this goddess of truth among us, but really it was about wearing a one-piece bathing suit and getting tied up all the time. My friend Jessica has a collection of the old stuff and I swear she gets trussed up more than chicks in Japanese erotimanga do. Then she turns the tables with her magic lasso and "makes them tell the truth." Sheesh.
Yeah, that could be it. Nowadays she's meant to be a symbol of feminine power but she still wears that silly outfit. It's not even about how much skin she's showing, it's that particular outfit, with the star-spangled trunks and the boob-hugging eagle.
And her sex-appeal angle is crunked, because she's this incredibly beautiful woman who has to play off this virgin princess thing, whereas Kitty Pride can be cute and look for a boyfriend and stuff (the Ultimate version of KP is dating Ultimate Peter Parker right now, and it's cute as hell).
On the flip side, I have faith in Joss Whedon. I absolutely love Firefly/Serenity, and he's doing a superb job writing Astonishing X-men right now. I hope he casts someone with a touch of edge, like Eliza Dushku.
That picture of the fat Wonder Woman is really funny. Yeah, what a boring character. Whenever I start hearing about her origin my eyes glaze over. I put her in the category of Thor-boring.
Thor-boring? That sounds kinky.
