New Image from Silent HIll
Ain't It Cool posted this new Silent Hill pic. Ain't it creepy? In response to Quint's point about how scary this thing would be in a dark alley, a practical AICNer commented "kick it in the throat."
It's interesting to me how the Silent Hill/Marebito vibe dovetail visually with the Saw/Hostel vibe. That is, they're both the bastard children of 7's "artful squalor" look, but one is unearthly while the other is deeply rooted in earthly grime and viscera. Guess which one I like better?
I can touch my feet to my head like that, I just don't wanna.

My only concern about this film is that every single image as well as the trailer has engendered huge expectations for me. I fear that I'll inevitably be disappointed because I can't imagine it living up to the film I have in my mind. Do you think we'll ever have another "Ring" experience (i.e.,horror that truly frightens?).
The fact that Ring gave us new stuff as late as 2002 is comforting. I have all kinds of faith in the brooding, chilly scare that Asian horror brought to the fore. Some new elements may need to be introduced, but my answer is yes.
That's true, as recently as 2002 we've been given The Ring, JU-ON, Pulse, Kairo, etc. I love the idea that some day we'll be "scared" again by something new and original.
Okay, I've TOTALLY got the Silent Hill bug now.
Why is this? For two reasons:
1) I downloaded the hi-def trailer from Apple last night (the one at 720p resolution which is nearly cinema resolution) and did some frame-by-frame stuff through it. It's incredibly well done; implying that the movie is too.
2) After browsing wikipedia's "Silent Hill" entries, I got totally captivated by the premise of Silent Hill 4 ("The Room") even though the consensus seems to be that it's the weakest of the games. Still, you wake up in your apartment and find that your door is now chained shut FROM THE INSIDE? (And the television and phone act weird...and the landlord and others right outside can't hear your yells and pounding... and a fetid, dank new hole in your bathroom wall is now the only way out?) Holy shit!
The "door chained shut from the inside" schtick is an example of one of my favorite horror story motifs: the business about "this whole thing already happened at least once...and it REALLY didn't turn out well for your predecessor....ESPECIALLY at the end."
Examples:
1) Rosemary's Baby (the dresser pushed against the connecting closet, blocking it shut; the orphan lodger who kills herself at the beginning, obviously when she finds out what they've got planned for her (although it doesn't make sense to the reader until the end)
2) The Geiger ship in Alien...*shudder* That creature's last move was to initiate the "Whoever you are, wherever you're from, DO NOT COME HERE" warning...
3) The previous Federation ship that disappeared at the Galaxy's edge in TOS "Where No Man Has Gone Before"...Spock reads their ejected log buoy and reports that the Captain frantically seearched for ESP information...and then ordered self destruct...
What am I missing?
4) The Roald Dahl story "The Landlady" ...the new tenant keeps thinking about the names she's given him of the previous tenants...and there's something so maddeningly familiar about the three names...and, come to think of it, he seems to recall the three names being connected in some way, but he can't really concentrate on it because the funny-tasting tea she's served him is kind of making him feel drowsy...
All the Norwegians hacked up and frozen in John Carpenter's The Thing.
When you start culling horror flicks, I expect this will emerge often.
It's such a great motif! I especially love the crazy, desperate messages and the way it doesn't make sense to the characters even though the viewer/reader catches on a little more quickly.
The makeshift barricades that didn't work are always good too.
5) Aliens (grudgingly)
6) Moria! "Drums in the deep"/"We cannot get out..they are coming" etc.
7) That encampment towards the end of "Starship Troopers" that was defeated by the tunneling bugs. ("His brains were sucked out!")
So many "Jordan says..." in a row; the page is turning into one of those old "Good 'n' Plenty" ads.
