Lost Boys: The Tribe

(2008) ***1/2

Octo already gave a pretty good rundown of the plot in his review, so I'll just mention a few other details.

The name of the town in LB:T is Luna Bay -- I don't know what the deal is with the name change. More than one character is a holdover from the first film, so either they all moved together, or there was some decision to change the name from Santa Carla (or someone on Wikipedia is on drugs). Also, Chris and Nicole's last name is Emerson, same as the family from the first film. Are they related? It's never really explained.

I'd also like to point out that the movie makes very efficient use of its running time. There's no surprise post-climax like in the first film. There's pretty much no fat on the script whatsoever -- not that the original had any anyway, but imagine the first film without all that stuff about grandpa's taxidermy hobby and remove Dianne Weist from the picture altogether and you have a good idea of how trim this story actually is.

This one's a lot bloodier than its predecessor and the action scenes are a lot clearer.

Also, the style isn't going to date itself in like two years, as with the first Lost Boys film. The one bit of annoying contemporary culture going on here, as Octo pointed out, is all the Viva La Bam! style prankery. I've always found it repugnant and devoid of any real creativity and blessedly there's only a little bit of it here.

And the head vampire = lame. Seriously. In terms of gravitas, he's halfway between Brad Pitt's character in True Romance and the guy playing Jim Morrison in Wayne's World 2.

There's already talk of a third installment. This one's supposed to go into more detail about the relationship between Edgar Frog and Sam Emerson. They talk briefly at some point in the movie and it sounds like something complicated happened between the two movies. The other Frog brother is supposed to come back for that one.

The lead character does look a little "Legends of the Fall."

But I still want to see this!
