The Plague of Zombies

(1966) ***

Professor Forbes & Doctor Thompson go to the village of Cornwall to investigate the mysterious happenings there. Seems there is an epidemic and the dead are being seen walking after they have been buried.

They dig up the grave of a recently buried man and discover an empty casket. Things are not right in Cornwall. Bodies disappearing from graves and the equipment at the old abandoned and presumably haunted tin mine that has been inoperable for years is suddenly running again.

Meanwhile, sir James' daughter Sylvia is out looking for her friend Alice but when she finds her, Alice is dead. Sylvia runs off and is grabbed by a group of raucous fox hunters and taken to a castle. After Sylvia is frightened and nearly raped, Sir James gets suspicious of Squire Hamilton who recently returned from the Voodoo-infested Indies. Could he be responsible for the dead coming back to life?

Classic Hammer Horror, loaded with suspense and some pretty cool looking zombies. Take notice that this film came out a full 2 years before Night of the Living Dead, I was quite impressed with these pre-Romero zombies. A nice choice in classic horror.

Cool pictures. The million dollar question: did they feed on human flesh?

And can they only be killed by separating the head from the body?

Seriously Catfreeek, I need to know. I've been searching (for some reason) for years now for the first zombie movie that features feeding on human flesh and this might very well be the one!

No I'm afraid not JSP I believe that honor may go to Night of the Living Dead but I've been known to be wrong before.

See I remember reading an article in the Boston Phoenix a few years back and it was an interview with some rock band and the topic was brought up. I forgot the name of it but it was definitely not NOTLD.. I've searched online and skimmed through books dedicated to the genre but still always come up short. That's it dammit... Stay tuned!
