The Midnight Meat Train

(2008) ***3/4

Based on the short story by Clive Barker. Leon is an artistic photographer trying to get his first big show. The gallery owner wants pictures of violence in the city. Real pictures not something staged, so Leon begins hanging out at the subway station late at night. He witnesses and photographs a gang harassing and threatening a young woman. He interferes and stops the crime before it is committed, the gang takes off and the woman gets on her train after thanking him. The next day Leon sees a picture of the woman in the paper, she is missing. He shows his pictures to the gallery owner and she loves them. She tells him to get 2 more shots like that and he can have a show.

He returns to the subway night after night snapping pictures of suspicious characters. He takes a picture of one guy who looks at him so coldly that he apologizes to him and runs off. Later after developing the picture he notices a ring on the man's finger. He looks back at the shot of the woman he saved as she's entering her train and sees the very same ring on the hand holding the train door open. He becomes obsessed with this weird ring wearing guy and begins following him around. He even follows him to work at a meat packing plant and takes pictures of him there.

He follows the big guy onto the train and photographs a slaughter as it happens. He's spotted by the maniac and the chase is on.

I don't really want to elaborate any more then that as not to reveal any key plot twists. I will tell you that there is no shortage of gore and the effects are nicely done. I didn't particularly care for the explanation of where the "meat" goes so I took away 1/4 star for that. Otherwise, the butcher is great in a Jason Vorhees meets Leatherface kind of way. The photographer is so daring and invasive with his picture taking, to the point of reckless stupidity. I got so annoyed with him for being so dumb that I began to root for the killer to take him out. I loved the weapon of choice (pictured above) a large metal meat hammer. All in all it was good fun.
