Music Friday

I recently outed myself to Johnny Sweatpants that I was listening to Radiohead for the very first time. His response forced me to confront the fact that despite my passion for music I am really a creature of habit. This is something I'm trying to challenge, at least a little, in myself. Anyhow, this effort has led me to wonder if our group might come up with a short list of essential recordings, eg "what album should everyone listen to at least once" or "if you could only have one album on your iPod/desert island, what would it be?" In this case I don't think we need to try to come up with something other people are unfamiliar with; I am more interested in hearing about people's favorite album(s) for listening and/or debating purposes. Anyone game?

My favorite albums are

Remain in Light by Talking Heads
Protection by Massive Attack
Mezzanine by Massive Attack
Dummy by Portishead
Viva! La Woman by Cibo Matto
Stereo Type A by Cibo Matto
69 Love Songs volume 3 by The Magnetic Fields
OK Computer by Radiohead
Come Down by The Dandy Warhols
13 Tales from Urban Bohemia by The Dandy Warhols

If I couldn't have all of those on a desert island I'd just let the monster get me.

For book, Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass (they're often in one volume).

I left out the Beatles! Probably Abbey Road and the LP version of Magical Mystery Tour. I know MMT is a mish-mash, but it has a lot of my favorites.

Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me

Wish

Both by The Cure. Definitely my "desert island" CD's.

Oh - and since Octo threw in books:
Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man by Fannie Flagg.

ooh, great picks octopunk, plus lots of new-to-me albums for exploration.

i love alice in wonderland and through the looking glass. after your black friday story, i don't mind revealing that at some point in my life i memorized "the walrus and the carpenter" which i think puts me slightly ahead of you and jpx in nerdiness. i'd be a lot ahead, but that leia fig is awfully beefy.

thanks dcd! i have a longstanding aversion to the cure because they seem so damn glum, but will give your picks a try. fair's fair.

will give daisy fay a read as well.

Can I add Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me and Daisy Fay too? If I can't then I'm just not going to this dumb island.

thanks catfreeek. i've never even heard of the eels.

desroc, if we were all going to be on the island together ("horrorthon island") i would selfishly say bring your hard drive as well as your ipod, since you and i apparently have very similar taste in music. though i have to admit (jpx and jsp will certainly kick me off the blog now) i have never in my life listened to a KISS album.

Can we bring our movie collections too? Since it is Horrorthon Island.

Now that I'm awake here are a few more:

Mazzy Star-So Tonight That I Might See
Grateful Dead-Terrapin Station & Blues for Allah
Dead Can Dance-Into the Labyrinth
Pink Floyd-Wish You Were Here
Baxter Dury-Len Parrot's Memorial Lift
The Verve-The Verve EP & A Storm in Heaven
Tool-Ænima
Morphine-Like Swimming
Billie Holiday-Billie's Blues

I would also have listed a few off the lists of Octo and desroc

Graceland - Paul Simon
London Calling - The Clash
If I Should Fall From Grace With God - The Pogues
Blue - Joni Mitchell
Mermaid Avenue - Wilco & Billy Bragg
Blonde on Blonde - Bob Dylan
Blood on the Tracks - Bob Dylan

I'd also grab something by a bunch of bands already mentioned like Pink Floyd, Beatles, Talking Heads, the Dead, Radiohead, Zeppelin, but not necessarily the same cds mentioned.

Btw, AC. I'm sort of an evangelist for this magazine called PASTE. It sounds like exactly what you're looking for. Think "Rolling Stone for smart, slightly older folks who have gotten too stuck on their own cd collection." It's also got good sections on independent movies, books, and video games. The best part is they send a 20 song mixed cd with every issue, and the editors all get to nominate their fav new songs for each mix. Tends to be a cool mix of new songs by famous acts (say the Robert Plant/Allison Krauss team or Thom Yorke solo stuff) and tons by newcomers in various genres.

Also, octo mentioned 69 Love Songs, which is one of the cds of the 90s, imo. Great choice.

Dammit! I wish I had jumped in sooner but for me life wouldn't be worth living without:

Verve - A Storm in Heaven
The Beta Band - The 3 Ep's
KISS - Hotter Than Hell
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Primal Scream - XTRMNTR (although you also need to know Screamadelica and Vanishing Point before the magic hits.)
The Beatles - Sgt. Peppers
The Velvet Underground - Live 1969 VOl. 1
Bob Dylan - Bootleg 4: The Royal Albert Hall Show
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Orange
Radiohead - Kid A
Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland
Elliott Smith - XO
Air - Moon Safari
Kraftwerk - Man Machine
The Stooges - Raw Power
Dandy Warhols - 13 Tales
De La Soul - 3' High and Rising

I feel like I'm forgetting something crucial...

Desroc I had no idea you were a KISS fan. Interesting pick of Alive 2 vs. Alive!

Octopunk - no need to apologize for Magical Mystery Tour. That album is nearly flawless and 2nd only to Sgt. Peppers in my opinion.

Blue Jay Way...

horrothon island is shaping up nicely. thanks catfreeek, landshark, and jsp for today's yummy albums suggestions, which should keep me busy and out of trouble at least until 2009.

landshark, paste sounds awesome, and their website looks like a small goldmine, but you did just call me old in front of the whole blogosphere.
