Willow Creek

(2014) ***

Jim has been obsessed with the legend of Bigfoot since he was a kid.  For his birthday, he drags his girlfriend Kelly on a Bigfoot tour that will culminate in a camping trip into the wilderness to the location where the only known film of Bigfoot was taken.  Along the way we get to learn a lot about their relationship, while they ignore multiple warnings both subtle and obvious not to progress further into danger.

Another Rotten Tomatoes fail.  88% fresh my ass! The buildup before they even get to the forest is more than half the total movie length, and so slow paced that I was pretty bored.  Whereas in The Afflicted, the planned trip and friendship between the protagonists would have carried a non-horror film, in Willow Creek, I just wasn't interested in this vanilla couple.  The tense/horror parts, while effective and disturbing, were short (relative to the buildup), and the end seemed derivative and only quasi-satisfying. It's main strength, for the purposes of horrorthon, is that it is a short movie overall (80 minutes). To make it more fun, if you do watch this, make a game of deciding the exact moment you personally would have abandoned the quest.

As much as that challenge sounds like it would make it more exciting - I'm going to pass.

I love found footage films and I never heard of this movie. I'm sorry it was a bore but I'm happy you took one for the team! This is why I love this damn contest!

"if you do watch this, make a game of deciding the exact moment you personally would have abandoned the quest." - This would be my sole reason for watching it otherwise it sounds pretty dreadful.

I had a grad student TA last year who seriously believed in Bigfoot. Like, for real.

The number of people who believe in Bigfoot is both hilarious and depressing. There's a Bigfoot Museum up in the Redwood Forest that I've been meaning to make a pilgrimage to. Maybe next year!

the male protagonist totally believes in bigfoot.

apparently there are enough bigfoot movies to populate someone's entire horrorthon. any volunteers?
