Gantz

(2010)****

Two former friends happen on each other at a train station when a stranger falls onto the tracks. One of the boys jumps down to help him and begs the other boy to come and assist him. They rescue the stranger but find themselves stuck and standing in the middle of the tracks with an oncoming train. Just before the train smacks them they dematerialize and come to in an apartment with a bunch of strangers and a large black orb. After playing a jolly good morning song the orb instructs them as to who their target is and that they must kill this target which happens to be an alien.

They survive the battle however most of their comrades do not. Once the alien has been destroyed they are returned to their lives only to find that every time there is an alien threat they are transported back to the room and instructed as to who their target is. They receive points for their performance in the battle once they reach 100 points they can choose from the 100 point menu, either revive a fallen comrade or be set free.

I absolutely loved this kick ass film which, like Death Note, is a live action version of a manga series. The battles are fierce and brutal the plot is intriguing and the creatures are completely awesome. With each creature they are tasked to find it's vulnerable spot which doesn't always prove to be easy. The trick is to just stay alive.  If they make it through the battle, no matter how injured they are, once they get back to the room they will be healed. I don't believe this would be a four star for everyone but if you're a fan of monster movies and creatures you will love it. I am hoping to review the sequel as well.

I find the 100 point premise thing pretty annoying (not a fan of that blurring line between games and movies), but it does seem that sometimes Japanese flicks can take stupid premises and make them fun. So I think I do want to check this out for the monsters and action scenes.

Have you seen the animated series Catfreeek? I'm only wondering because I'm thinking I should start there. Death Note the series was so much better than the movies and I'm glad I watched it first.

I have not but I do agree with you. I stumbled on this like Death Note and only afterwards did I discover the animated series on both cases.

Sounds pretty damn fun! Again you come up with the odd/satisfying find.

Ha! I actually have the first two issues of the manga because I borrowed them from 50P a couple of years ago and I don't think he wants them back. The story is way cool but the writing sucks! Might be a translation thing.

Anyway, I had no idea this was a movie. Cool find!
