Maniac

(2012) ***1/2

Frodo goes psycho! This serial killer film starring Elijah Wood is shot almost entirely from the killers perspective. We get a first hand glimpse of his mind in the full grip of madness. Our killer likes to stalk women, murder them then scalp them and attach their scalps to mannequins which he keeps for company in his apartment. He owns a mannequin shop where he restores classic mannequins. An artistic photographer who shoots mannequins happens on his shop and he becomes enamored with her. The trouble is he's really incapable of having a normal relationship.

Those sad, big blue eyes that were so effective in conveying Frodo's anguish work equally as well in expressing the deep-seeded mother issues that plague this killer. Though the first person perspective does get annoying at times it works quite well in showing the alarming fear of his victims. The mannequins themselves add a creepiness to this movie that is just delightful. A really good first choice, I love being pleasantly surprised. Horrorthon!

Mannequins ARE pretty scary.

Mannequins are terrifying (especially the ones being use in The Gap these days). I imagine that Frodo's home must have smelled really bad with all those decomposing scalps. Yuck. Great find, as always!

I don't like the ones they use in Old Navy. They have these creepy big smiles. Good find, Cat!

Frodo, noooo! I wonder how a serial killer in The Shire would fare? Nice one, Cat.

Ooooooh! Goin' in the queue! I like the plot line. JSP and I saw a pretty creepy mannequin-themed Twilight Zone episode just last week.
