The Last Winter

(2006) ***1/2

Preparing to begin drilling for an oil well in a remote Alaskan area, a series of unexplainable things happen to the work crew. Supernatural forces of unknown origin terrorize the helplessly snowbound workers. A mixture of raw emotion due to cabin fever and the worsening threat of whatever seems to be picking off members of the team, brings everything to a boiling point.

What a pleasant surprise this was for such a low budget thriller. Just shows what can be done with good actors, a claustrophobic environment and a creepy unknown force. A little slow moving at first but once it gets going, that slow build seemed quite necessary in adding to the tension of the film. At this point in the month I’m usually buried knee deep in horror shit, so glad to find a gem hiding within the stinking pile.

I reviewed this last year and gave it the exact same rating. This was a surprisingly effective film and I loved the ending.

Sounds really good - I admit I do not remember JPX reviewing it, but damn! it's impossible to remember all these movies!! I dig that title shot - what a vast wasteland.

Agreed! That title shot is quite evocative; I'm immediately drawn in.

What kind of ghost could inhabit such a place? Who could possibly have been here before? Intriguing.
