Cure

 (1997) ***

A series of random murders are being committed in the Tokyo area. All the victims are found with an X carved across their throats and chest. Each time the perpetrator is found close to the murder scene but they have no recollection of committing the murder. A mysterious young man is taken into custody and he seems to have an effect on anyone who comes into contact with him. Somehow he is getting into the heads of the people who speak with him. As the detectives try to link him to the murders they begin to discover that something very extraordinary is taking place.

At first this film just seems to be a detective murder mystery but it quickly takes a strange turn. Ordinary people begin committing murder against their very nature. I don't know how I missed this intriguing little cerebral film, I guess with all the J horror I was watching this one slipped through the cracks. It's pretty enjoyable watching a calm and levelheaded Japanese detective start losing his squash.

Gotta love those slow-burning J horror flicks.

I still can't tell if that's a dead man or woman in that second picture? I'm looking forward to finding some whacky J-horror this year. This sounds like such a weird movie!

It's a woman. I found this on a list of good horror movies you probably have never seen. There are quite a few horror movies that had the unfortunate timing of coming out when other bigger movies were hogging up all the attention. That is loosely my theme this year to dig up the ones that fell between the cracks.

Sounds tempting. Another J-horror on my list for this year is Executive Koala.
