Heartless

(2009) ***1/2

Jamie bears a large heart shaped birthmark on his face, he feels ugly and unlovable because of it. He lives in the violent eastside of London, where crime runs rampant. He’s a photographer and likes to shoot his surroundings. One night he follows a hooded gang member hoping to catch a few good shots. What he discovers is a band of demons causing mayhem. One of the demons spots Jamie, the following night he and his mother are attacked and his mother is killed by them. He goes on a path of vengeance and winds up making a deal with the Devil in exchange for a birthmark free life. But the Devil wants more from Jamie than he bargained for and keeps upping the ante. Before too long his life is spinning out of control.

This film had a Donnie Darko type of feel to it for me. The lines of reality seem blurred and somehow surreal. The demons look crazy good and Jamie’s torment is well portrayed. A good solid story and a nice surprise find. Even the biddy’s would be pleased with this one, it has an element of love story as well as some sweet, sweet gore.

wow, speaking as a biddy, sounds awesome!

jpx, do you think it sounds like bdd if you'd sell your soul to the devil to get rid of a birthmark? maybe we should add that screener question to the dsm....

Yay! A biddy-safe gorefest! Sounds intriguing.

I knew I was intrigued by this as soon a you mentioned the birthmark -- it's directed by the same guy who directed The Reflecting Skin. Glad to hear it was good. Love that demon.
