Ju-Rei: The Uncanny

(2004) ***

I'm not sure if there really is a plot to speak of here. This is a series of 10 short episodes and a prologue but they are played in reverse. Essentially, we watch the end of the movie first and work backward to the beginning. Everything is sort of explained as we get further into the film and we sort of see where it all began after watching the prologue. If I had to compare the story to an American tale I would have to say it's similar to urban legends like Bloody Mary or Candyman.

The thing I liked about this flick is that it's just creepy as all hell right from the beginning. I sat here engrossed and waiting to find out what the hell was terrorizing these people. The white faced J-horror ghosts have gotten old and though they appear here as well, they are not by far the major creep factor of the film. There is a dark shadowed figure and a woman who appears like she's blurred out of focus but she's standing right next to the person. Also hands that keep appearing out from under things and grabbing people. It's just chock full of atmosphere and a little short on plot. A nice one to watch on a night like last night. A slight chill to the air, no one was out and about, I was all alone and it was windy as all hell. Not great but still a good watch.

Is this at all related to Ju-On? The visual of the creepy, pale, Asian girl looks just like Ju-on. Or, is that just a staple image of J-Horror?

It's kind of a staple image, there is no connection to Ju-On.

Whether or not the movie's a knockoff (and it sounds like it isn't), the packaging certainly is.
