Zombieland
(2009) ****
We first meet out narrator, a teenage boy alone in a remote town. He has survived the zombie holocaust by creating a personal list of rules that he follows to the letter. He's determined to find out if his parents have survived as well so is on his way back to Ohio. On his travels he meets up with a bad ass guy who he only knows as Tallahassee. The two of them decide to travel together for awhile since they are headed the same way.
Tallahassee makes a stop at a small grocery store hoping to find some twinkies. They encounter some hefty zombies there and 2 young sisters who by no easy means wind up traveling with our boys. The girls are headed to an amusement park in Los Angeles. On the way the foursome encounter plenty of flesh eaters and a few surprises along the way.
Highly entertaining. This film is a refreshing and much needed change to the zombie genre. There is no shortage of gore but it's not shot in the typical fashion at all. The killings are not overly dramatic and it's more the uniqueness of the characters themselves that make each fight special. Woody Harrelson is most definitely the glue that holds this cast together tightly. His character is funny but he also kicks serious ass.
The only real complaint I have involves a shameless Ghost Busters promotion. Just when it was beginning to really piss me off it is nicely rectified within the film. There is also a time where I was beginning to get itchy for something to happen. It just seemed like a long stretch of character building with no action to offset it. I might also complain about the blatant stupidity of the girls in the end sequence but the massive zombie slaughter overshadows their ignorance. For the most part it's lighthearted, fun and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was nice to see a film on the big screen for a change.
